The seed is nothing but a fertilised ovule.

The seed has the following parts.

Seed Coat

The outer covering of the seed is called the seed coat. Its main function is the protect the embryo inside.

It has a tiny pore called the micropyle. Water and oxygen enter the seed through this pore during germination.

Cotyledons

A seed may contain one or two storage tissue called cotyledons.

It stores the food material which the baby plant needs for it's growth.

Embryo

Embryo is protected by the seed and cotyledons.

It has two parts:

1. Radicle

2. Plumule

During germination, the radicle develops the root system whereas the plumule develops the shoot system.
